I've followed his works through his blog and Etsy shop for years and they never fail to be a source of wonder and inspiration to me. They are all beautifully intricate, detailed illustrations with just a touch of whimsy. The time and patience it takes to complete each piece is amazing. He has collaborated with fashion designers and his screen printed paper cuts are famous.

The Gift by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and paper cut artist Rob Ryan tells a tale of a young girl and her granted wish to be buried in an enchanting glade she happens upon. The story goes on to follow her life as she lives her life to the fullest, becoming an artist, marriage, and motherhood. It is a beautifully written book and the pictures that accompany the words can almost tell a tale of its own.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 351px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gU2e-GoLbLs/TuoiT8NngzI/AAAAAAAACxc/LpLO7kUEqE0/s400/GiftThe_UKUSHB_W_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5686395205484774194" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GqVhlh6f5KY/TuoiUmJg5GI/AAAAAAAACyI/GLte0LkS4Mw/s400/the-gift1-blog.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5686395216741852258" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 226px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G9d32uC_qA8/TuoiUYmI30I/AAAAAAAACx8/v-16HoB4rmY/s400/TheGift_HC_3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5686395213103816514" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 226px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-SaWkSONZ3AI/TuoiUO0d7DI/AAAAAAAACx0/jUIq7tVMmnA/s400/TheGift_HC_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5686395210479561778" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 226px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nXFfUpeiAmI/TuoiTyI9BdI/AAAAAAAACxo/Lpq-BARnufU/s400/TheGift_HC_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5686395202780857810" />

Rob Ryan's latest book is A Sky Full Of Kindness, which he both wrote and illustrated. Each video features pan-and-scan fade transition filming of the picture book with the author or celebrity narrating.

This is a great way to discover new books and check out their story and illustrations before purchasing - and all in the comfort of your own home!

Also on the plus side, Rachel Jarrett, Director of Kids and Lifestyle Products for Barnes & Noble.com says, "Children exposed to read-aloud storytelling at a young age develop language and literacy skills sooner than those who are not. We’re excited to bring some of our nation’s bestselling children’s authors and celebrities-and their stories-into America’s homes and help children learn and grow."

All their past storytime books are also made available on their site.

Ready for next month's read out loud book? It's technically my first cousin's daughter but in my family we call practically every female relation and non-relation 'cousin' or 'aunt'.

I came across a wonderful and unique story Monkey and Rabbit Together retold by Dr. Mike Lockett and illustrated by Ming-Jen Hsu.

The story is based on an African folktale about two friends faced with each other's bad habits. A monkey and rabbit have a contest to see who can sit still the longest without exhibiting any of their bad habits. Monkey has a bad habit of scratching while Rabbit sniffs constantly. While telling stories to pass the time, both Monkey and Rabbit can't help but fall back into their old behavior. By the end of the story the two friends learn to accept the other's 'annoying' habits with humor. The tale is a simple and genuine lesson about friendship.

Hsu's illustrations are wonderfully drawn. The animals' facial expressions crack me up. I especially liked his addition of animals joining in during their contest.

An audio CD comes with the book to help kids follow the story on their own. Monkey and Rabbit is in a bilingual format with English on one side and when flipped over, Chinese is on the other side.

Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142106015372230471.post-40636093474784010962010-10-21T10:13:00.011-04:002010-10-21T10:59:07.927-04:00Nobody's Fool<img style="float:none; margin:5px 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TMBSnL8Mg0I/AAAAAAAACn8/FLWZubrIr78/s320/NobodysFool.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5530511175584613186" />

Last week I went to Yoshitomo Nara's exhibit, Nobody's Fool, at the Asia Society Museum in the UES. They are so often humorous and expressive, but always honest and insightful. He's influenced by punk and rock music and like that genre, his work conveys feelings of frustration, anger, and loneliness of the generation. I loved going up close and examining his paintings - the colors are so lush, almost edible, and they have such a smooth, creamy texture.

His installations are very inviting. The one of a dollhouse, I wanted to crawl into the space and look at everything on each wall! In another room, the installation was of a Japanese style home. He had murals blocked off by a wooden wall with windows cut out at different heights and locations along it. At certain distances, the cut outs give only a small window view of the entire painting. Another memorable installation was comprised of small rooms with doors. Behind every door was a painting or object inside. Each was a surprise and evoked a particular emotion for me. I thought this was very well done.

If you have time please go and check out Nobody's Fool - it is worth the trip. The exhibit will be up until January 2, 2011.

Nara also has a wonderful children's book, The Lonesome Puppy, which you can find in the museum shop.

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 205px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TMBSyRaomHI/AAAAAAAACoU/3EsXJ3ul-no/s320/yoshitomo_nara_nobodys_fool.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5530511366033021042" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 265px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TMBSvWJTr_I/AAAAAAAACoM/LiTsP23qwGU/s320/yoshitomo_nara_hyper_enough_to_the_city.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5530511315762917362" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 294px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TMBSsSOUNlI/AAAAAAAACoE/2TvUidcSOjU/s320/whiteriot95.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5530511263170573906" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 271px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TMBSjACDs0I/AAAAAAAACn0/tNx-rZ6QHnw/s320/mainart.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5530511103668499266" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TMBSdd3qkRI/AAAAAAAACns/5nP3XJDag_I/s320/4975987726_59a757e7ea_z.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5530511008598757650" />Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142106015372230471.post-74397400896930288232010-09-28T20:48:00.015-04:002010-09-28T21:54:41.598-04:00Drawn In Brooklyn Exhibition<img style="float:none; margin:5px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 221px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TKKZ6qTwvKI/AAAAAAAACnA/u216LO72dCA/s320/DSC02379.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522145326178286754" />

Over the weekend, I went to Brooklyn Public Library's central library branch for their latest exhibit, Drawn In Brooklyn. I was not only inspired by all the wonderful varied styles of work, but also encouraged to keep drawing and stay passionate about what I do. Each artist was so unique; they all used different interesting mediums to complete their work. I highly recommend going - I will be heading back again since I didn't get a chance to view everything in the Youth Wing.

The exhibit includes 34 featured children's book illustrators, all of whom live and work in Brooklyn. The original book art is displayed in the library's Grand Lobby, where you first walk in. On the 2nd floor, balcony cases include installations from the illustrators. Each case holds a different illustrator's handmade work of art. I love that they created 3 dimensional pieces because they probably work in 2D most of the time. In the Youth Wing, displays of their sketches, models, and tools allowed me to see their process. Needless to say, it was very educational for me.

Drawn In Brooklyn is curated by John Bemelmans Marciano and will be on display until January 23, 2011.

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 177px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TKKZxC-5IBI/AAAAAAAACm4/gKdoDtdNv80/s320/DSC02412.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522145161002950674" />
<a target"_blank" href="http://www.danielsalmieri.com/">Daniel Salmieri - Those Darn Squirrels!

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 165px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TKKZoqoh8nI/AAAAAAAACmw/ANWRbdMZvKM/s320/DSC02406.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522145017027752562" />
Pat Cummings - Carousel

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 280px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TKKZfN8AbiI/AAAAAAAACmo/6Do6WLMmkjE/s320/DSC02402.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522144854705991202" />
John Nickle - The Ant Bully

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TKKY6NbJPII/AAAAAAAACmg/lk5isQK_Xxg/s320/DSC02395.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522144218912996482" />
Paul O. The patterns are designed by one of my favorite British children's book illustrators, Quentin Blake. He's written many of his own stories, but growing up I remember his drawings from his collaborations with author, Ronald Dahl. His work is exaggerated and humorous, but thankfully never cross the line into cartoony art. Check out his official website here.

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 367px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TJfszmCOOgI/AAAAAAAACl4/f4KzVE8ziRw/s400/skate.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519140239493184002" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 390px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TJfsw----6I/AAAAAAAAClw/vBHtnD3kUfM/s400/cockatoo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519140194650880930" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 347px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TJfsqiYjSEI/AAAAAAAAClo/XgzO2WPugnE/s400/animals.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519140083894274114" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 349px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TJfsnYO61vI/AAAAAAAAClg/r0D5aGnnW7A/s400/alpha.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519140029629912818" />Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142106015372230471.post-53656215801646451622010-09-08T10:21:00.007-04:002010-09-08T11:01:51.362-04:00It's A Book!!!<img style="float:none; margin:5px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 323px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TIehIykjQEI/AAAAAAAAClI/yT4Dv2ba_7o/s400/book.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514553441124565058" />

Check out It's A Book by author & illustrator Lane Smith. I grew up reading and loving his hilarious storybooks (The Stinky Cheese Man & The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs) with Jon Scieszka.

This new title is about a bookish monkey and a techy jackass. The two characters have a funny exchange over what a book can and cannot do. The donkey uses words like 'text, blog, scroll, tweet' while the monkey just says 'no, it's a book'.

Smith chooses his earthy tones well and I've always liked his dry brush, outlined style and textured shapes.

I can really appreciate this book because of its simple message and adorable characters.

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 322px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TIelIPt-PpI/AAAAAAAAClQ/IT6Y2j5--zo/s400/2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514557829815352978" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TIelQfzCPsI/AAAAAAAAClY/movDZrDo5Ak/s400/JA0.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514557971570507458" />Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142106015372230471.post-33905640947480304182010-08-31T15:47:00.009-04:002010-08-31T16:52:27.016-04:00Are You Afraid Of The Dark?<img style="float:none; margin:5px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 238px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TH1q94sjc1I/AAAAAAAAClA/yXrXp7O63RQ/s400/shadow.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511679130395177810" />

Children's book illustrator, Suzy Lee, has just released a new book through Chronicle Books! I mentioned Ms. Lee's Wave some months back in my 'Favorite Books' entry.

Her newest picture book, Shadow, is another beautifully drawn wordless story. It centers around a little girl in a dark attic well-equipped with her light bulb and imagination. On each page, the girl has a fun time playing with light and shadow.

The illustrations are full spreads with just two shades - black and yellow. The color choice is obvious and the result is simple, straightforward and stunning. Lee perfectly captures the innocence of a young girl content with her own creativity.

You can buy Suzy Lee's Shadow here.

Here are sample pages:

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 343px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TH1p5qZt06I/AAAAAAAACkw/edJnZhOEeZg/s400/004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511677958326965154" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 343px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TH1p0nm2RWI/AAAAAAAACko/hX4NiLVmE9c/s400/003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511677871677392226" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 343px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TH1px7oukQI/AAAAAAAACkg/uTZCJj1ANrU/s400/002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511677825514377474" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 343px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TH1psh-0fII/AAAAAAAACkY/lDxlVofe0mQ/s400/001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511677732728372354" />Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142106015372230471.post-14950886526757922802010-08-09T20:03:00.008-04:002010-08-09T20:38:52.819-04:00Decorate Your Desktop Wall<img style="float:none; margin:5px 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 363px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TGCeI1P7DXI/AAAAAAAACjk/PVwQLNk6hxI/s400/betsymain.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503572619216751986" />

Check out the latest Design*Sponge desktop wallpaper from Betsy Walton of Morningcraft. Ms. Walton created the August 2010 wallpaper. The artist resides in Portland, Oregon and has been painting since 2006. Her wallpaper design is so feminine and soothing to the eye. The design is fluid and has a dream-like quality to it. She included geometric as well as natural elements to the abstraction. I took a few minutes to stare at it and picked out so many shapes, lines, and silhouettes in the layers!

I really like the artist's use of color in her projects. When used, the colors really pop from the painting. The layers and textures in Walton's works make me want run my fingers across the surface. Yet the paintings still maintain a folk art feel. They are reminiscent of Paul Gauguin's paintings, especially the ones he completed while in Tahiti.

I will definitely download this D*S wallpaper - it'll come in handy when I need to give my eyes a rest =)

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 310px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TGCeX9j4Y-I/AAAAAAAACj8/uDmdGM1aTLA/s400/3.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503572879145984994" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 312px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TGCeVvpvYFI/AAAAAAAACj0/fYPFFd3IffM/s400/2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503572841052725330" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 324px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TGCeS2vX7tI/AAAAAAAACjs/RSRVj-VCvwA/s400/1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503572791415795410" />Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142106015372230471.post-56280319543193039552010-07-15T09:49:00.013-04:002010-07-15T10:22:43.839-04:00125 Birthday Candles<img style="float:none; margin:5px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TD8YHusvzcI/AAAAAAAACh8/-J3uJOxZLKQ/s400/josef_frank1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494136591489158594" />

Today I'm reminded of Josef Frank's wonderful contribution to textile & interior design. While he seamlessly transitioned between architecture and furniture design to glassware, lighting and metalwork, I think his textiles are what really set him apart. While the predominant aesthetic included geometric, non-representational designs during his career, Frank's use of free form, organic patterns defied convention. His patterns are so fun, crafty and beautiful without being over the top. I can't imagine him not smiling as he worked!

Here are some examples of his patterns in use as wallpapers.

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 280px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TD8YkaiUZjI/AAAAAAAACik/xkg5LJLlm8o/s400/swedish-1-26.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494137084292916786" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 312px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TD8Yg_xvLnI/AAAAAAAACic/aWvBNi_ZwIY/s400/mason1-28-09-14.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494137025570221682" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 377px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TD8YdFoyQoI/AAAAAAAACiU/NeEwn3Rja0o/s400/josef_frank2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494136958423810690" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 345px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TD8YZuhhvKI/AAAAAAAACiM/E1Gu6-_x85k/s400/josef+frank+deadly+squire.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494136900679744674" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 335px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TD8YV9WHt-I/AAAAAAAACiE/5rDb-xiFF2I/s400/4.23_josef_frank.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494136835938957282" />Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142106015372230471.post-47800969543661433902010-06-28T18:23:00.010-04:002010-06-29T09:32:49.662-04:00Illustrator Erin E. Stead and written by her husband Philip C. Stead while browsing at the book store.

The story centers around an elderly man named Amos McGee and his friends at the zoo. He takes time out of his day to take care of them. Amos plays chess with the elephant and he races the tortoise. Amos sits calmly with the shy penguin and he lends the rhinoceros his handkerchief when the rhino has a runny nose. At the end of his visit, Amos reads stories to a nyctophobic owl. One day, Amos catches a cold and out of concern, the zoo animals take the city bus to his home to take care of him.

Philip Stead's story is thoughtful, gentle, and delivers a wonderful message to children. Erin Stead's wood-block illustrations are delightful. I enjoyed looking at the quiet beauty of each page. The textured imperfections from the wood-block added a touch of homemade craft, which I loved. Her style and color choice are simplistic (in a good way). She knows just how much detail to add into a character's feature or the siding of a house while leaving certain pieces a solid hue, like the trees.

Check out Ms. Stead's illustration process from the link above. It's always so insightful to see others' way of working out their ideas to sketches to final drawings.

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 374px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TCn0f1DqHJI/AAAAAAAACg8/8GZ9-LLBm8s/s400/sickday3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488186448583203986" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 372px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TCn0bCvAe_I/AAAAAAAACg0/gpPrQfngbhY/s400/EStead+image+15.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488186366355340274" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 370px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TCn0XSl1d1I/AAAAAAAACgs/UwL7pQkg7wk/s400/EStead+image+13.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488186301892360018" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 375px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TCn0SX32-GI/AAAAAAAACgk/wNLJ0z5K6hA/s400/EStead+image+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488186217410787426" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 196px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TCn0HOO3cwI/AAAAAAAACgc/DfRUf-1UElI/s400/p18,19busstopfinal.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488186025844372226" />Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142106015372230471.post-5132106824710967642010-06-17T14:01:00.008-04:002010-06-17T14:27:26.298-04:00Larger than Life and Full of Details

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 119px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TBpoFGIGMxI/AAAAAAAACfU/-vIT36QKgCk/s400/peter_01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483809933030208274" />

I came across artist, Charlotte Mann, while looking for examples of very detailed wall drawings. She's a London based artist with a background in fashion, who made the shift to designing murals in 2006 when she created the back drop for Peter Jensen's Spring/Summer 2007 show.

As you can see, each hand drawn back drop, using black markers, is filled with details. Every mark is thought out, whether it's the image on a postcard or cross-hatching to create shadow. Even with all the intricacies, the artist still never loses a sense of spontaneity and reportage drawing in her work. I don't know how she begins her process...does she make small sketches beforehand on paper?...or maybe she just starts on the left and works her way across the room!

Regardless of her process, the result is beautiful and a true work of art.

<img style="float:none; margin:5px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 193px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TBpogbo_TfI/AAAAAAAACf8/WRLcaWmo14I/s320/tsol_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483810402661780978" />

<img style="float:none; margin:5px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 226px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TBpodfuAV0I/AAAAAAAACf0/kFmwoFehMVE/s320/huf-roomshot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483810352216954690" />

<img style="float:none; margin:5px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TBpoZEWlhoI/AAAAAAAACfs/Lh1JaQYtEi4/s320/hampstead.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483810276151494274" />

<img style="float:none; margin:5px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TBpoV8U2UdI/AAAAAAAACfk/OXS0H8bjJ_0/s320/cubewide.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483810222457115090" />

<img style="float:none; margin:5px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TBpoR-w3OJI/AAAAAAAACfc/p3XbAjSTdcA/s320/b_01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483810154392008850" />

Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142106015372230471.post-86966553899125917822010-06-03T09:12:00.010-04:002010-06-03T09:50:20.630-04:00(Most Likely) Wallpaper Designs Not Found In Your Grandmother's House

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 228px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TAewtVpKhPI/AAAAAAAACUY/_Yoe-EkuDWo/s320/Trove1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478541764669900018" />

Trove Wallpaper Designs are currently on exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Triennial in the Upper East Side. The company, founded in 2006 in NYC, are comprised of Jee Levin and Randall Buck. Both designers have a history in fine arts and photography, which is evident in their wall covering designs.

Their unconventional designs using organic themes are breathtakingly beautiful, especially seen spanning an entire wall at full scale. Gone are the tightly, repetitive patterns usually found on wallpapers. Instead, the designs are open, natural, and spontaneous. Rather than flat, geometric patterns that scream 'I Am Wallpaper', I get a sense of perspective and depth from the forms. Not only that, but they're eco-friendly as well!

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 194px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TAewzAq7TBI/AAAAAAAACUg/1j6RU5qy8SI/s320/Trove2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478541862119361554" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 211px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TAew5gODa6I/AAAAAAAACUo/laQBRxAsvkw/s320/Trove3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478541973667408802" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 173px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TAexAsU5I-I/AAAAAAAACUw/506oTqJ2CyA/s320/Trove4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478542097176404962" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 236px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/TAexHE_F25I/AAAAAAAACU4/7SrQgsFyfGo/s320/Trove5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5478542206875065234" />Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142106015372230471.post-40552661854061330742010-05-25T20:55:00.009-04:002010-06-03T09:12:00.963-04:00Origins Of A Monkey<img style="float:none; margin:5px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 294px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S_xyU1toVEI/AAAAAAAACTs/QhjKJdJ2ryI/s400/1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475376949317096514" />

Last month I went to the Jewish Museum's exhibit, 'Curious George Saves the Day: The Art of Margret and H.A. Rey'. I was so excited to see such an extensive body of their original drawings and early children's books. H.A. Rey is such an effective illustrator. His simple line drawings convey expressions and movements so well! I also loved that all of the text was handwritten. I also liked how the exhibit showed the drawings with color separation and I was able to learn a bit about the printing process in the book publishing industry.

This exhibit well exceeded my expectations! The curator successfully paralleled the content of their work with the Reys narrow escape (on bicycles no less!) from Nazi-occupied Europe where they fled Paris and finally made it to New York. In 1941, Houghton Mifflin offered the Reys a contract and the 'Curious George' we know and love is welcomed into the world.

The Jewish Museum's special exhibit is on from March 14, 2010 - August 01, 2010.

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 316px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S_x36LCGxaI/AAAAAAAACT0/cgIkDTSdOPA/s320/2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475383088253420962" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 255px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S_x4EOt2ERI/AAAAAAAACT8/jXgcvyz3lNA/s320/3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475383261040873746" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S_x4LPUqclI/AAAAAAAACUE/Zd2SDjXkWSA/s320/5.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475383381462774354" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S_x4SUadhII/AAAAAAAACUM/B7KT1h6VbfE/s320/4.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475383503088354434" />Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142106015372230471.post-66455764777079165302010-05-12T14:36:00.010-04:002010-06-29T06:49:50.816-04:00Cut Vegetables In My Kitchen<img style="float:none; margin:3px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S-r5TM0ofaI/AAAAAAAACSc/uezf-icELPQ/s320/IMG_0048.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470458805649702306" />

For the past month or so I started working on a new mini project to decorate my walls in the kitchen. When we first moved in, my husband commissioned me to create some art of vegetables to hang on the walls. I experimented with oil painting them but the vegetables didn't have the graphic qualities I was looking for. (Or maybe oil painting just isn't my forte...) I was debating whether I should try to make some linoleum prints when I came across the inspiring work of Julene Harrison. She is a London-based cut-paper artist who creates beautiful custom typographic designs.

While my attempt at cut paper is not nearly as large or intricate as Julene's works, I had such fun creating this for my kitchen wall. I am already thinking of future projects where I can incorporate more cut paper!

Butternut Squash
<img style="float:none; margin:3px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S-r5nWq7LYI/AAAAAAAACSk/p457IqDVFOo/s320/IMG_0051.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470459151890722178" />

Scallions
<img style="float:none; margin:3px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S-r57bP6lzI/AAAAAAAACSs/LOJLMBrX5GQ/s320/IMG_0052.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470459496716998450" />

Corn
<img style="float:none; margin:3px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S-r6IwEvgpI/AAAAAAAACS0/J4vhaNxgUGQ/s320/IMG_0053.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470459725645578898" />

Tomatoes
<img style="float:none; margin:3px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S-r6bMzgSnI/AAAAAAAACS8/yv2IEsQnwtk/s320/IMG_0054.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470460042595551858" />

Peppers
<img style="float:none; margin:3px 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S-r7CsBDrMI/AAAAAAAACTE/mqnBYZFmYSs/s320/IMG_0055.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470460720988794050" />

Avocado
<img style="float:none; margin:3px 10px 10px 3px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S-r7PfO3qqI/AAAAAAAACTM/RsgCFLWNKZA/s320/IMG_0056.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470460940895365794" />Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142106015372230471.post-24691250120782120802010-04-29T12:26:00.007-04:002010-04-29T12:45:17.766-04:00I Care About Books

I just read this article Who Cares About Books by Steven Heller on AIGA's website. The article talks about the future (or for some, lack of) of tradition books and book design with the growing accessibility of ebooks and recently with the launch of Apple's ipad. I have to say that I wholeheartedly agree with his opinion - deep down, I truly heart books.

To read the article, click on this link.

Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142106015372230471.post-1966429361512778922010-04-14T20:38:00.034-04:002010-04-14T21:58:41.776-04:00These are a Few of My Favorite Things...

I was at the book store the other day browsing the children's book section (as usual) and came across some wonderful stories. I can spend an entire afternoon on the carpeted floor immersed in others' imaginations and admiring their art. I think I was the oldest kid there.

Here's a list of my favorites during my most recent visit (In no particular order). I have to say that while the stories I chose are all very unique and creative, it's the illustrations I fell in love with!

Farm
Written & Illustrated By Elisha Cooper WebLink

<img style="float:none; Sowa is well known for his whimsical, surrealist paintings. They often depict animals and people in reverse roles.

He has illustrated a number of books in English and German. Little King December, a story by Axel Hacke and illustrated by Michael Sowa is a beautiful story about two polar opposite worlds. The story has a mix of Lewis Carroll and Kafka's upside down upsurdities - and is a wonderful read.

Another book Sowa illustrated is Esterhazy: The Rabbit Prince by Irene Dische and Hans Magnus Enzenberger. This is an imaginative story about an European family of rabbits. The youngest bunny, Esterhazy, is sent to Berlin — a place with a Wall separating the city, "a little bit like Kansas City, one part of which belongs to the state of Kansas, the other to the state of Missouri ... only not so friendly."

Sowa's Ark is a compilation of 50 works of art. It was first published in 1996 and reprinted in 2006. All the paintings share simplistic titles and humorous subjects. Some of the backgrounds in Sowa's works remind me of Hudson River School paintings. It is striking to see the contradictions of normalcy mixed with the outlandish. In 2010, the artist printed wall calendars which can be purchased here.

Here are some samples of Michael Sowa's art.

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 231px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S7u9WDS1jmI/AAAAAAAACOs/Srt6wqwoGms/s320/msowa_11" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457163560028573282" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 220px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S7u9TFWDcyI/AAAAAAAACOk/Z220af7mnP4/s320/msowa_10" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457163509039330082" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 218px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S7u9P2rB6cI/AAAAAAAACOc/FaJHrlRi3rk/s320/msowa_7" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457163453561170370" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 228px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S7u9NPWhOvI/AAAAAAAACOU/mRnaWSa_VtA/s320/msowa_5" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457163408646421234" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 315px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S7u9KMVdR_I/AAAAAAAACOM/2CzZ2L2gAsY/s320/msowa_4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457163356297054194" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 229px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S7u9ERu1_HI/AAAAAAAACOE/CCrgnC6FxLM/s320/msowa_3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457163254666493042" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 219px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S7u9A1wz5MI/AAAAAAAACN8/fRC_z7hUYGs/s320/msowa_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457163195618944194" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S7u86o-Qr1I/AAAAAAAACN0/2php3azGLuQ/s320/msowa_1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457163089106480978" />Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142106015372230471.post-21268690388321055682010-03-27T00:36:00.013-04:002010-04-06T22:10:07.423-04:00Mural Wall InspirationI saw a wall mural before & after featured in Design*Sponge that grabbed my attention. It is so colorful and fun and I love that they used a projector - I am now more inspired to continue my projects at home!
Unfortunately, I forgot to take my own before photos for my records...oh, well...it was just an empty wall - I don't need a photo to remember that!

Check these out! I had given up on decorating when after 2.5 years of living in it, my walls are still bare and the few photos I do have framed are pathetically lonely against my previous owners' paint color. (Hey, they did a decent job!) But after an unexpected project with my cousin involving a nursery room, paint, and a jungle scene, I started fantasizing about painting murals and creating decorative walls as a side job. Then I thought, wait, I have nothing to show for it...no one will trust me to dabble on their walls without a portfolio of past work. Next came the bright idea - why not decorate my own apartment and fill it with fun wall art ideas in every room! Luckily, my husband was more than agreeable. Now I stay up late into the night painting. It's fun, calming, gratifying, and kind of reminds me of art school without the added stress. Also, I like to get my hands dirty.

Here is my first of many projects. These are 4 faux frame silhouettes of birds...I'm waiting for the paint to dry so I can add in some highlights and details to the frames. What do you think? Let me know!

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 215px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S6Mm2XHHDhI/AAAAAAAACMg/pKwRpw01GP8/s400/IMG_0044.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450242689407061522" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S6Mikf45dVI/AAAAAAAACLY/yfHM3ibjCys/s320/DSC01975.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450237984479212882" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S6MiZPheASI/AAAAAAAACLQ/HSkij5hOQRU/s320/DSC01969.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450237791107416354" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S6MoB6sMPAI/AAAAAAAACNA/vp8ijcE74jA/s320/DSC01971.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450243987448019970" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S6Mn2O4mzBI/AAAAAAAACM4/pYg_ZhGtMxY/s320/DSC01974.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450243786710371346" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S6MnrGhCjMI/AAAAAAAACMw/2H0oLperVNE/s320/DSC01973.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450243595485482178" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 315px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S6MmscwOFDI/AAAAAAAACMY/SbmiyKx3QAQ/s320/IMG_0047.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450242519122973746" />

On another note, here is an update on the PenTales logo. It is a very extensive show on the film maker/artist's life. It starts from his early teenage years and chronologically takes you through his 2 years at CalArts, 4 years at Disney and all of his films including more recent movies like Corpse Bride and Sweeney Todd.

Burton's works on exhibit include video, graphics, film, drawings, paintings, puppetry, photography, storyboards and costumes. It is a glimpse into the inner workings of his mind, which I find to be both disturbing and endearing, but nonetheless fascinating. I really enjoyed his outlandish sketches which included funny titles to them. I found myself chuckling through many of his drawings as I made my way down the crowded room. It was also really interesting to see the numerous drafts, storyboards and models that went into the initial stages of his films. I also watched a wonderful version of "Hansel and Gretel"by Burton. The set design was visually striking with a cut paper feel to it. The fight scene inside the candy house between the children and the witch was my favorite!

Tim Burton's show is going on until April 26th. If you're a fan of his, it's definitely worth checking out!

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S5wyWvh5hBI/AAAAAAAACKo/TTBCq2z46NY/s320/tb41.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5448285015508616210" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 227px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S5wyRqeAnXI/AAAAAAAACKg/zxj2so0nJCQ/s320/tim-burton-moma-exhibition-drawing.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5448284928250781042" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 254px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S5wyMKpXgQI/AAAAAAAACKY/dYJYveNRW10/s320/TIM-BURTON-PIN-HEAD-GIRL_x.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5448284833809137922" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 242px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S5wyIa9a4VI/AAAAAAAACKQ/1VbP559ydKU/s320/stainboy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5448284769468735826" />Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2142106015372230471.post-79601796030960653682010-03-05T00:27:00.017-05:002010-04-06T22:10:54.501-04:00Illustrator Beatriz Martin-Vidal<img style="float:none; margin:10px 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S5CghK6dQAI/AAAAAAAACIY/OLd-ENgAhg0/s400/redriding1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445028441216598018" />

Take a look at Spanish illustrator, Beatriz Martin-Vidal's beautifully evocative illustrations. She has many published works including 'Secrets' & 'My baby Love' and a number of myths & fairy tales. Among them is the story of 'Little Red Riding Hood'. I love that the artist has updated the red cape to a red hoodie sweatshirt! The little girl's expressions are full of innocence and Beatriz has a great eye for perspective. She really knows how to layout a page and grab the reader's attention.

Ms. Martin-Vidal uses colored pencils, watercolors, inks and Photoshop in her work. They contain gorgeous textures and layers while still maintaining a sketchy, spontaneous quality. With each piece of artwork, I'm immediately drawn into the scene and the characters. What are they up to and why?

I hope you enjoy her illustrations as much as I do!

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 211px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S5Cgu4LHvHI/AAAAAAAACIg/-EjQF935Nsw/s320/baby1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445028676704386162" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 249px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S5Cg_NRWsFI/AAAAAAAACIo/RYL6jP2Gq5k/s320/baby2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445028957245583442" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 269px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S5ChLJ8axGI/AAAAAAAACIw/1DuXw0VApJg/s320/birdgirl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445029162510894178" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 244px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S5ChSY2I0WI/AAAAAAAACI4/qv8ZbSXQiHc/s320/cinderella.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445029286770168162" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 273px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S5ChXpxrQpI/AAAAAAAACJA/nMml3Xu_xqw/s320/cinderella2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445029377214202514" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 229px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S5ChxMWEy9I/AAAAAAAACJg/m03jPCKaspw/s320/secret2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445029815990406098" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 223px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S5ChszzMobI/AAAAAAAACJY/HTgp1jg4uQ0/s320/secret1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445029740682191282" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 228px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S5ChoJ92ppI/AAAAAAAACJQ/RKDDeydUi0o/s320/meta2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445029660733122194" />

<img style="float:none; margin:0 10px 10px 5px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 219px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_dw1gY4NNMPM/S5ChijbNRZI/AAAAAAAACJI/KLXj0RTra6k/s320/meta.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5445029564487910802" />Siahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05542910060616336652noreply@blogger.com0
